Smart Financial Habits for Students
Managing and Growing Your Money
📝 Introduction
I know how tough it is to manage both studies and money. Distractions are everywhere, food, outings, online shopping, even any type of subscriptions. I also used to spend my pocket money without thinking. But then I realized that if I start building smart money habits now, it will help me not just today, but in the future also.
1. Track Your Spending 📝
The first step is to know where your money is going. Even small amounts matter. Write it in a diary or note it in your phone.
🔹 My Habit:
I started tracking my daily expenses and realized I was spending too much on snacks. Cutting that down gave me extra savings. Whatever, I've a clothes shop in which my father was working at, and sometimes, I also doing his job and with the help of this job, I developed my mind to do calculations in my mind and I does all my expenses in my mind.
2. Follow the 50-30-20 Rule ✨
Here’s a simple way to manage money:
50% for needs (School items, Food, Stationery)
30% for wants (Movies, Outings, Games)
20% for savings (Piggy Bank or Small Investments)
🔹 My Habit:
I keep aside 20% of my money in a not piggy bank but in my school bag which has secret pocket. Slowly it grows, and it feels great when I can buy something useful without asking my parents.
3. Invest in Yourself 📑
Best investment = education and health. Spend money on books, healthy food, or learning skills instead of wasting it all on temporary fun.
🔹 My Habit:
Once I saved up and bought a three book instead of wasting on fast food. That book is still helping me in studies. And you'll will also try to buy some healthy fruits that keeps you healthy & feel like energetic.
4. Save in Small but Smart Ways 💸
You don’t need a bank account to start saving. Simple habits like keeping a piggy bank, saving coins in a jar, or keeping a separate pouch for “savings only” really work.
🔹 My Habit:
I keep a separate small box in my study table where I put ₹10–₹20 whenever I can. At the end of the month, it feels like a mini treasure.
And after I spend on my good assets which helps me to same & earn more.
5. Avoid Borrowing, Start Earning 💰
Borrowing from friends feels easy, but it’s not a good habit. Instead, try to earn something — even a small amount through tutoring, freelancing, or blogging.
🔹 My Habit:
The first time I earned a little money on my own, I felt more proud than spending pocket money. And If you have urgent work to borrow money so, lend money from your close relatives, close friends, & even you ask your guardians also.
⭐ Bonus Tip – Health = Wealth
Money is not just for buying things — it’s also for keeping yourself healthy and strong. Spending on fruits, good food, or even a stress-relieving hobby like buy colours for painting, buy a non-fiction book, even skin care products is also your investment, etc. is also a smart financial habit.
🔹 My Habit:
Every week I buy fruits like banana, lemons to drink in morning, apples, etc. with my savings, and I feel more energetic while studying or such type of physical activity.
🌟 Conclusion
We don’t need to be rich, but we should learn to be wise with money. Small habits like saving, tracking, and investing in ourselves can make a big difference in the long run.
👉 Start today — because the way you handle money now will decide how stress-free your future will be.
